A crucial meeting to end the American College impasse is being convened at Chennai on 18th April (Monday) inviting representatives from both the warring factions.
[This came to reality because of the intervention of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court. The two groups have been alloted different time slots to represent their case. According to the GO, the committee will inquire and submit a report to the government for a suitable order.]
The High Level Committee, which was constituted by the Tamil Nadu Government through a G.O. dated 18 February 2011, is convening the meeting to resolve the issue. It will be held at the Chief Secretary's conference room in Chennai from 10 am on Monday.
Both the groups, which have been fighting over the issue of American College administration, have named their representatives for this meeting called by the three member High Level Committee comprising Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the Principal Secretary to Higher Education Department.
Names of persons attending the meeting have been officially informed and relevant documents substantiating their claims are to be presented before the committee.
The group opposing the 'illegal interference of CSI Bishop' in the American College affairs will be represented by four members: T. Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar (former Principal and Secretary); Dr. P.R. Anbudurai (who has been made Principal-in-charge by this faction); K. Anbunathan (Additional Dean- Self Financing programmes) and Ms. Shanthi Manuel, governing Council member of the American College.
Four member will represent the side of the Bishop, who is the college president [he is not actually the president of the college, but the president of the governing council of the college that has NO EXECUTIVE powers]. They are: Fernandez Ratnaraja (CSI Church); J. Arul Doss (who has been made Vice-Principal by Bishop); and S. Stephen (who has been made Dean, Academic Polices, by Bishop). The fourth member is yet to be decided.
[Bishop wants his son to be sent as his representative but the committee need Mohan (who has been made Acting-Principal by Bishop) as one among their representatives]
"We are not opposed to the CSI Bishop but only against his illegal interference in certain college matters. His act of appointing R. Mohan as acting-principal is highly condemnable and against the college constitution." Dr. Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar told The Hindu on Saturday.
He said that his team would submit documentary evidence gathered through Right to Information Act on how the Bishop had been "misleading" the Government and collegiate education authorities on American College matters.
According to source, several other members from both sides are also accompanying the representatives to discuss the college issue with various officials in Chennai.
"We are hopeful of a good solution to this crisis in the interest of American College" said Dr. Stephen representing the group supporting CSI Bishop.
