EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE, MADURAI, MARCH 18
SEVEN students of the American College who were on a fast-onto-death since Wednesday (16-03-2011) were arrested by the police today (18-03-2011 by around 8.30pm) and sent to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) for medical examination.
The students - Vijay, Manikandan, Arumugam, Akash, Noyal George, Ajees and Vigneswaran - were protesting at the college premises demanding appointment of a special officer to run the college pending resolution of the vexed issue of principal's appointment and arrest of those responsible for attacks on fasting students during the month.
The students were medically examined by a team of dactors from the GRH after which deputy commissioner of police P.K. Senthi Kumar, former principal Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar and parents of the students were unsuccessful in persuading them to give up their intransigent approach.
In the evening at around 8pm, the students were arrested by the police and sent to GRH.
