பழைய மாணவனின் வருத்தமும், விண்ணப்பமும்

கார்த்திகேயன் நம் கல்லூரியின் முன்னாள் மாணவன். தற்போது மதுரைப் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் தன் ஆராய்ச்சி படிப்பை மேற்கொண்டுள்ளான். கல்லூரியின் மேலுள்ள அவனது அன்பினாலும் அக்கறையினாலும் இக்கட்டுரையினை  எழுதி, அவனது வலைப்பூவில் இட்டுள்ளான்.

அக்கட்டுரையை இங்கே மீண்டும் பதிப்பித்துள்ளேன் ...

1800 களின் இறுதியில், மதுரை கிராமமாக இருந்தது.  கல்வி என்பது அனைவருக்கும் கிடைக்காததாய் இருந்ததது. குறிப்பிட்ட வர்க்கத்தினரும், சாதினரும் கல்வி பயின்று வந்தனர்.  கல்வி என்பது மனிதர் அனைவருக்கும் பொதுவானது, இன்றியமையாதது, வாழ்வைக்  கற்று தருவது. கல்வி அனைவருக்கும் கிடைக்க வேண்டும், பயில வேண்டும் என்ற நன்னோக்கில் அக்கல்லூரி எழுப்பப்பட்டது. அக்கல்லூரி, மதுரையின் அடையாளமானது. அக்கல்லூரிக்காக, மாணவர்களின் படிப்பிற்காக, மதுரையின் முதல் பாலம் கட்டப்பட்டது. அன்று முதல், கடந்த 125 ஆண்டுகளாக, அக்கல்லூரியின் புகழ், கல்வி மூலம் பரவிக் கிடக்கின்றது.

பத்து ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு வரை, அக்கல்லூரியில் படிப்பது என்பது, மதுரை மற்றும் தென் மாவட்ட மாணவர்களின்  கனவாக இருந்ததது. அக்கல்லூரியில் இடம் கிடைப்பது என்பது சிரமமானது. விஞ்ஞானிகள், தலைவர்கள், இந்திய ஆட்சித்துறை அதிகாரிகள், காவல்துறை அதிகாரிகள் என பல்வேறு முக்கிய மனிதர்களை, அக்கல்லூரி மனித சமுதாயத்திற்கு தந்துள்ளது. அக்கல்லூரியின் அடையாளமும், அங்கீகாரமும் கடல் கடந்தும், வான் கடந்தும் நிலை நாட்டப் பட்டுள்ளது.

அக்கல்லூரி,  மதுரையின் இதயத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. 2000 இல், அக்கல்லூரி  அமைந்திருக்கும் இடம் வர்த்தக கும்பலால் கவனிக்கப்  பட்டது.  அக்கும்பல் அதை எவ்வாறு வளைக்கலாம் என்று திட்டம் போட்டது. அக்கும்பலின் நய வஞ்சகதிற்கும், பணத்திற்கும்,  பலத்திற்கும்  கருங்காலிகள் சிலர் பலியாக ஆரம்பித்தனர்  . சிலர் அவர்களுக்கு  ஆதரவாக செயல்பட ஆரம்பித்தனர். அவர்கள் கல்லூரியை விற்க வேண்டும் என்ற உண்மை நிலையை கல்லூரி ஆசிரியர்களிடம்  கூறினர். மக்களின் கல்வியை விட, அவர்களுக்கு பணமே பிரதானமாய் இருந்தது.  சின்னராஜ் ஜோசப்  மற்றும் பல நல்ல பேராசியர்களும் மற்றும் மாணவர்களும் அக்கும்பலுக்கு  எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்ததனர், அவர்கள் மக்களுக்கு தான் கல்லூரி என்றனர்.

கல்லூரி இடத்தை வளைக்க அக்கும்பல் காவல்துறை, அரசியல் மற்றும் அரசு துறைகளைப்  பயன்படுத்த ஆரம்பித்தது.  சின்னராஜ் ஜோசப் மற்றும் அவர்களுடன் உள்ள நல்ல பேராசிரியர்கள், மாணவர்களும்,என்ன அநியாயம் நடந்தாலும், கல்லூரியை ஆக்ரமிக்க முடியாதபடி தடுத்தனர். போராடினார். போராடிக்கொண்டே இருக்கின்றனர்.

போராட்டம், வெறுப்பு இவற்றைக் கண்ட மக்களிடையே, மாணவரிடையே அக்கல்லூரி மேல் இருந்த மதிப்பு. 2008 பிரச்னைகளுக்கு பிறகு குறைய ஆரம்பித்தது. 2008 ஆம் ஆண்டு வரை, மதுரையின் சிறந்த கல்லூரியாய், அக்கல்லூரி இருந்ததது.  அக்கல்லூரிப்  பற்றி செய்தி தாள்களும், பத்திரிக்கைகளும் உண்மை நிலையையோ, நியாய நிலையையோ தெரிவிக்க வில்லை, மக்கள் குழப்பமுற்றனர். 2008 ஆம் ஆண்டிற்கு பிறகு, மாணவர் சேர்க்கைக்  குறைய ஆரம்பித்தது.  மாணவர்கள் அக்கல்லூரிப்  பற்றி தவறான எண்ணத்தில் சிந்திக்க ஆரம்பித்தனர்.

2009 , 2010 சேர்க்கைக்கான மாணவர் விண்ணப்பங்கள் குறைய ஆரம்பித்தன.

2010 -2011 இறுதி ஆண்டு மாணவர்களின் கதி என்ன என்பதே தற்பொழுது தெரியவில்லை?

கல்லூரியின் பழமை, பெருமை அறிந்த பலரே அக்கல்லூரியில் சேர்ப்பதற்கு பரிந்துரைப்பது இல்லை. கல்லூரியின் முன்னாள் மாணவர்களும், பலரும் அக்கல்லூரியில் சேர்வதற்கு பரிந்துரைப்பது இல்லை.

கல்லூரியைக் காப்பாற்ற என்ன செய்யலாம் என்று அனைவரும் யோசிக்க வேண்டும்.

2011 ஜூன் கல்வி ஆண்டில் யார் விண்ணப்பிபார்கள்?

ஏப்ரல் மாதத்திற்குள், நம் கல்லூரி போராட்டம் வெற்றி பெற வேண்டும்?

கல்லூரி மீண்டும் செயல்பட மாணவர்கள் வேண்டும்.
அடுத்த கல்வி ஆண்டில், மாணவர் சேர்க்கைக்கான முயற்சியை நாம் மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

நம் போராட்டம் வெற்றி பெறவும், கல்லூரி பெருமையை நிலை நாட்டவும், வரும் கல்வி ஆண்டில் கல்வி பயில்வதற்கு மாணவர்கள் வேண்டும்.

தன்னலமற்ற அமெரிக்கர்களால் உருவாக்கப் பட்ட கல்லூரியை, தன்னலமே பிரதானமாய் கொண்ட ஈன பிறவிகளிடம் காப்பாற்ற வேண்டும்.

நண்பர்களே!  வரும்  கல்வி ஆண்டில், மாணவர்கள் அதிகம் வரவில்லை என்றால், அக்கும்பல் கல்லூரியின் நிலத்தை விலை  பேசினாலும் ஆக்ரமித்தாலும் ஆச்சர்யம்  இல்லை.

நம் கண்முன் இருப்பது எல்லாம், எவ்வாறு அமெரிக்கன் கல்லூரிக்கு மாணவர்களை சேர்ப்பது என்பதும், எவ்வாறு இதை மக்களிடம் பரப்பவது என்பதும் மட்டுமே !

OUR (G)OLD STUDENTS

Dear Dharumi Sir: I propose to address you like from now on just as a recognition of the good work you have been doing. I hope you will permit me to do so.

 

Thanks for including my recent mail in the IPAC blog. Here are some news about some of our (G)Old students that you may include in the blog. You may expect more to follow from other readers.

 

The Hindu of this morning (17.7.10) carries a news about Mr. K. Allaudeen IAS. He was the Special officer for running the World Classical Tamil conference held recently in Coimibatore. He is a (G)Old student of the College. There was a time when Mr. G. Devarajan arranged special coaching classes for IAS aspirants. His effort was not in vain. A few from those classes entered the Indian Administrative and allied services. Mr. Allaudeen is one of them.

 

Another old student at the conference was Prof. Solomon Pappiah, the Pattimandram King who presided over the pattimandandram. 

 

Let us hope we hear more such news about our (G)Old students.

AN APPEAL FROM Prof. V. SRINIVASAN

Dear Dharumi: 

I understand that there is a feeling in the minds of some that the blog site IPAC and its web address should be renamed or abandoned as the purpose for which it was created has been achieved and the College is legally in safe hands. I feel such a move will be doing injustice to the blog site that had done a wonderful job of mobilizing public opinion on the issue and acting as a very good medium of communication between the friends of the College. The word "save" in the web address of IAPC does not always have to be taken to imply any danger or situation from which the college has to be saved. When people sing the anthem" God save the Queen..." they know there is no immediate danger for the Queen yet every one in UK and its territories sing it. So IPAC should retain the same name and web address.

What we should do now is to make the blog site more useful to the College in different ways. Thanks to the internet we can do it well. I understand that there are only about 400 e-mail ids for which the intimation about any new post in the blog is conveyed through e-mail. For a College with nearly three to four hundred or more students going out every year this is a small number. Let all those who receive the intimation send at least one more e-mail contact of a friends of American College so that in the next two months the number of addresses swells to 1000 and to 2000 after two more months and so on...We should aim for a lakh by Christmas 2011.

We can think of activities as we grow. Sharing information about achievements of old students and recognizing the achievements could be one activity. Some time back I went to a Government office to meet an officer for a favor. He welcomed me granted the favor and when he found out that I am from American College he started talking about his American College days though he was there only for a year to do his PUC. To my disappointment he did not have much to say about his Physics classes. There are lots of people who think of the College let us get them under IPAC umbrella.

Prof. V. SRINIVASAN WRITES ON OUR ALUMNI

Dear Dharumi: 

(G)Old students are like gold. They are the assets for any educational institution. In the western world one of the main sources of revenue for academic institutions is from old students. Many old students bequeath a share of their property to their Alma mater. For some in India it will be hard to believe this because it doesn't happen like that in this country. People say it is because the old students don't think of their schools and colleges the moment they leave the institution. I would say actually it is the other way about. 

How often do we as an institution think of and recognize the achievements of our alumni? This morning news paper carries the news of one of our old students Mr. Senthamarai Kannan promoted as an Inspector General of Police (IGP). There should be some mechanism built in our college to keep track of such news and send official greetings and congratulations to such persons. This may not be the first of such elevation of that kind. We have already have Mr. Shyam Sundar (now in the DGP rank), Mr. Jaffar Sait and many others. We might have missed greeting them at the right time. Let us now create a cell (at least a voluntary cell to begin with) to keep track of such events and build a good relationship with our alumni. Many of our problems will disappear. "It is in gving we receive".

Cannot IPAC  serve as the voluntary cell I have mentioned above? Let us invite the readers of IPAC to share such news with other through our blog to begin with. Let IPAC start working on building strong alumni to fight injustices. Present students and faculty alone will not be sufficient.
