STRIKING STAFF OF THE AMERICAN COLLEGE WAGING A WAR AGAINST ILLEGAL TAKEOVER
DECCAN CHRONICLE|COIMBATORE|03-05-2011|PAGE 5
The striking staff of The American College waging a war against the "illegal takeover of the institution by the CSI Bishop" have started conducting 'under-the-tree' classes inside the campus in the interest of students' future.
About 800 students turned up Monday to attend. However, the (Illegal) acting principal Dr.R.Mohan appointed by Bishop Christopher Asir insisted that the striking teachers sign the register in his possession. As they resisted, the Bishop faction refused to open classrooms following which the staff conducted classes under the trees, a lecturer said.
"If we sign the register maintained by them, there is every chance that they would produce it as a document to put up a show that all is well in the college (and they are running the institution smoothly). We (definitely) do NOT want to give up our struggle against the Bishop to save the institution. At the same time, we do not want the students to become scapegoats", another staff said.
With the intervention of the Madurai Kamaraj University, exams are being conducted for some courses by the acting principal from April 25.
(Mohan conducting examinations is totally illegal.
The illegal appointee Mohan, mislead the Madurai Kamaraj University by saying that the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has given a direction to him to conduct examinations. In reality there is NO such Order of Direction to Mohan.
There is NO approval from DCE for Principal-ship for Mohan, who authorized him to conduct semester examinations?
The High Level Committee formed by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has completed its inquiry process and it has not yet decided upon the dispute, ignoring the HLC, how can Mohan unilaterally decide to conduct examinations.
The MKU has not given any order or green signal for Mohan to conduct examinations).
About 900 students alone are said to be attending exams (conducted by Mohan. The figure 900 is highly exaggerated, actually it is less than 300), while the strength of the college is about 3000 students. The remaining students are returning to the college to attend classes (conducted by the striking staff).
Principal-in-charge Dr. P.R. Anbudurai, who is heading the anti-Bishop staff (Dr.P.R.A is the legal heir of the college) said, "Out of 419 courses, exams for 294 courses are alone scheduled while 125 courses have been left out in the present examinations being conducted by the illegal administration. (Eventhough thay have scheduled to conduct exams for 294 courses, they actually conducted exams for only 100 and odd courses).
The court direction to explore the possibility of conducting exams after a month as per the recommendation of the high level committee has been ignored (by the Bishop's group).
The conduct of examinations is arbitrary and illegal as unauthorized persons are conducting them".
The revolting teachers are demanding that the MKU, which has the statutory right to supervise and regulate examinations in autonomous institutions, oversee the conduct of classes and exams. "The university should constitute a team to monitor the classes taken by us. We will report to them and NOT to the Bishop's principal", a professor in English department said.
They charge that incompetent persons were holding exams (to compensate for the majority of the striking faculty, Bishop's group appointed a few unqualified persons as lecturers to teach, set question papers and to conduct exams for UG, PG and MPil programs, atrocious!) and thus jeoparadizing the career of the students appearing for these exams and demand for common examinations once the classes are completed (when the entire syllabus is duly covered).
Dr. Anbudurai has appealed to the students, who have not attended their major, innovative, supportive, life skill, CBCS and part IV courses to attend classes (under the tree).
