Teaching staff of the American College in Madurai have blamed the Madurai Kamaraj University for keeping silent on the issue of conducting examinations for the students in time.
The university was criticised for ‘withdrawing itself' from the American College issue when a large number of students were affected because classes were not conducted, syllabus was not completed and the semester examinations could not be scheduled due to the crisis in campus between two groups.
On Sunday, the American College teachers belonging to the anti-Bishop group have announced that they are ready to take classes even under the trees to complete the syllabus and pave way for timely conduct of end-of-semester examinations in students' interest.
“University's obligation”
“The MKU should not withdraw itself from American College examinations issue. It has an obligation to see that the examinations were conducted because only the university approves the results and award degree certificates even though the college is autonomous,” P. R. Anbudurai, Principal in-charge, said at a press conference here.
He felt that the university cannot abdicate from its responsibility citing the absence of Vice-Chancellor as a reason.
He expressed concern regarding the hundreds of students were unable to write the examinations since the pro-Bishop group and the Acting Principal R.Mohan did not schedule the examination dates.
Students affected
“Exams were not scheduled for 128 courses out of the total 250-odd courses offered in American College. Students of at least four major departments were badly affected. We appeal to the MKU authorities and the high level committee constituted by the Tamil Nadu Government to intervene immediately,” he said.
Urging the MKU to step in and ensure that the classes/examinations are conducted for the “left out students and left out courses”, Dr. Anbudurai said the teachers belonging to the anti-Bishop group are ready to cooperate.
“We have started taking classes under tree shade. But many students are away to their places since the hostel is closed. We appeal to the students to attend the classes,” the Principal in-charge Prof. P.R. Anbudurai said.
