A high-level committee constituted by the State Government on February 18 to solve issues related to management of the American College here has decided to hold a meeting in the Chief Secretary's chamber at the Secretariat in Chennai on Tuesday (today 29-03-2011).
According to a communique issued by the Higher Education Secretary K. Ganesan on March 25 (the very next day after a case filed by a student came up for hearing at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court seeking court's direction to speedup the inquiry process of the high level committee), the committee comprising himself, the Chief Secretary S. Malathi and Home Secretary K. Gnanadesikan would meet at around 11 am on Tuesday to find an amicable solution to the problem in the college.
Additional Government Pleader P. Thilak Kumar produced a copy of the communique before the Madras High Court Bench here on Monday. The court was seized of a writ petition filed by a student alleging total inaction by the High Level Committee ever since its constitution.
After perusing the document, Justice K. Venkataraman adjourned the hearing of the case to Thursday. E. princy Sandralo, a third year B.Sc. (Physics) student of the college, had filed the writ petition last week seeking a direction to the State Government to take appropriate steps for peaceful functioning of the American College here through the intervention of the high level committee.
The student alleged that several untoward incidents taking place inside the college campus had materially affected smooth functioning and peaceful atmosphere of the institution. She also claimed that the academic functions had come to a grinding halt much to the displeasure of parents and students.
