VIOLATION OF CHILD RIGHTS

*

Prof.BABU CHARLES who was among those stayed in the campus on 19th night reports:

Bishop’s Ploy and Poor Children become victims!!!!
Violation of Child Rights and those dreadful moments……..

It was a tense evening in the American college, Madurai on 19/04/08 as the Bishop of Madurai and Ramnad Diocese Dr.Christopher Asir had unconstitutionally convened a Governing Council (GC) (wherein the constitution clearly states that the Principal and Secretary ONLY has the powers to convene the Governing Council and the Bishop is only the Chairman of the council) of the American College to take action against the Principal and Secretary Dr.Chinnaraj Joseph Jaikumar. The meeting was convened in the forenoon and the Principal and Secretary was unconstitutionally suspended.

Following this action, the Bishop, his son Jeba, his daughter Ms. Jyothi Christober, his son-in-law M.D Christober and his supporters tried to storm the American college and take control through unlawful means. This emotionally charged situation was aggravated by the presence of local rowdies in support of the Bishops family. American college, with a 127 year old tradition of offering Liberal Christian Higher Education to students irrespective of caste, creed and religion with secular values had never witnessed such a dreadful situation which would never fall within the purview of lawful activities. I say it as dreadful as the subsequent unfolding of events never was a testimony to the very basic values of humanness that we cherish and uphold.

The most pathetic and appalling event is the bringing of girl students from CSI Diocese managed colleges and small children to support their cause. Around fifty children, mostly boys, were made to sit outside the college in support of the bishop. Surely a violation of child rights endangering the safety and security of children. It was a busy evening as the entire Madurai was watching Edhirsevai as part of the Azhlagar festival. These children were mobilized around 7.45 PM and were from a nearby centre run by the Diocese supposedly offering rehabilitation for Tsunami affected children, mostly believed to be orphans.

CHILDREN FROM A NEARBY DIOCESE MANAGED SCHOOL MADE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE UNLAWFUL AGITATION PROVOKED BY THE BISHOP OF CSI MADURAI RAMNAD DIOCESE. Most of them are supposedly Tsunami victims and claimed by the Dioceses as orphans.

CHILDREN FROM A NEARBY DIOCESE MANAGED SCHOOL MADE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE UNLAWFUL AGITATION PROVOKED BY THE BISHOP OF CSI MADURAI RAMNAD DIOCESE
The most awful, terrible and horrible nightmare to these children was to be made to sit there the whole night and watch the most painful events wherein the entire college was in an agitated mood, both sides. The children were witness to these tense moments as the Bishops supporters were all fuming with anger, abusing the Principal and his supporters, intimidating them of dire consequences, threatening the students and faculty who were in support of the college and its Principal. Those innocent children were witnessing the entry of police force strength by strength, vans and jeeps plying in and out of the college. I wonder what amount of fear this situation would have instilled in the young minds of these helpless, poor children. These children surely suffered a psychological trauma as tension prevailed the whole night. Suppose something untoward had happened, these children would have become the first set of victims as they had the only option of running helter skelter and getting lost in the crowd, from fire to frying pan.

Who would account for such an atrocious situation? Is it because the children were from very poor households belonging to the marginalized sections of the society that their rights were taken for granted and made to face the perils of angry, agitated, furious and volatile situations?

Why these children?

What amount of trauma it would have created in their minds? How would it impact on their future, their career? What role model is being provided to them?

Moreover, none of the children were aware of the situation and even otherwise they have been misguided by those selfish souls to safeguard their own vested interests. Are these kids the "family's" shield in their bid to capture Principal's office on that night? Only a cruel and scheming Machiavellian mind can bring the hapless children into a muddle like this.

This is a clear instance of violation of Child Rights……….. we have to come together to fight for this cause

On seeing all these activities, I feel bishop has lost his values as being a bishop. Please take action to remove him from his position and make him valueless.

Please read the date as 19/04/08 of the incidents. We regret about the mistake. One Mr.Robert, is twisting facts by giving an alternate blog addresss. We carefully examine facts and publish them.
We have created a mass movement which will ensure that the corrupt force like the Bishop will be seen out of the city.
Mr.Robert, do you mean to say that the photographs of these poor children are fabricated? ( Some of the pictures came in The new Indian express also.)
I strongly regret that the principal of the college is not able to push for the arrest of the Bishop for gathering Kids there in our campus.
I have another question.
We have solid facts about the election of the Bishop and will execute necessary actions. Our previous Principal Peter Jeyapandian had the courage to face all the students in a forum.
Has the Bishop got the same courage to explain himself in front of the students.
We will see how he will answer all the basic questions about his role in everything.
The political climate may be suitable to use the minority card. The American collge has no climatic value , but a perenial one.
The fact that the Bishops party didn't sign the collector' peace committee proceedings itself proves that he will never be able to win a battle of dharma.
All political parties and trade unions have joined hands. Please be away from us or face the consequences.
We have a simple fact that the Bishop has several ciriminal cases pending against him.
I strongly recomend that our present and old students should target the political personality involved in this a well.
Regards
Puthiyavan.

Dear George,

Thanks for updating us with your blog.

We will be grateful, if you can update the crowd who are not in Madurai or who can not afford to be in Madurai on the day of protest as to how we can show our SUPPORT for the 'GOOD CAUSE'.

We will keep Praying, We will keep watching and we will do whatever best is needed to safeguard the college.

Hi Robert,
It has been a wonderful thing. Your blog has very bad English. It is not just typos.
Please enlighten me regarding this. How did you people plan this coup?
Did the political personality promised you something in return of this?
Just you have put your hand in the bee hive. Bees don't differentiate believers and Non-believers?
You have clearly given a tone of threat in your message as expected.
All that we ask you is , can your Bishop address the democratic forum with evidences?
Puthiyavan.

The American College has been one among the great college in the history of Madurai, with the reputed name of excellence... Now going down on public illicit comments… Well, its simply by the behaviour of the Bishop and his colleagues... sometime, I think our college is one among in non-corruption… But everything seems go vain with the activities of our 'Bishop', who has no power over the college…
I really don't know when these kinds of people turn their path straight in the wellbeing of the college and college students…
Really its pathetic to see the school children being used in these incidences... they knew not what they have done… they knew not for what they are doing… poor flocks!!
Really, I'm not sure whether Bishop is being moral in his activities for the public or for the Christians….

Hi all,
This is puthiyavan again. Yesteday, I came to see off my friend Soundrapandi at Tambaram. He reached Madurai to participate in the protest. My father who is also an old student of our college gathered all his friends and will be there this evening for the protest meeeting.
What does American college mean to all of us across ages?
My father was a son of a poor farmer in a rural village near Melur. He became a District Educational Officer ( DEO) later. I got into American college following my father. This college has supported the rural people with no education or some education. Can you imagine a two tier city like Madurai, producing students with international competance. My previous company HR insisted that they wanted to recruit only American college students from Madurai in their company?
Apart form this, let me get back to the matter straight away. The fundamentalist force tries nothing but use brutal force to throw us out. There was a blog address created by Nila contradicting himself by publishing the leave letter and the cancellation of the same. Our principal had a good judgement in sensing the plan and cancelled the trip.
The concept of special economic zone has bulldozed the entire country into pieces. They targeted farmers, we kept quiet. We educated, now realise that they can target our own existence.
There is detailed report on the evolution of the Bishop. We have copies of his certificates and mark statements right from child hood. I think, if he had opted for the DMK district secereatary post, things would have become easier. He has so much of good qualities.
Now, there is a hue and cry that the minority status of the college is not maintained. By this, what are you trying to say? I worked on the Web content of American college in 2003. I have the history of the college which clearly declares that the college is for all. Reverend Bishop, this not your church election to use the caste card.
I have an unedited article on the history of missionaries in south India.( Kodaikanal Mission Union Libraray).( If you have any reading habit, can get it)
You want to call all of us as pagan and you want to become a Brahmin?
The language employed in the blogs by Bishop and men should be laughed at. I request the American college English department to take a note of educating English and RPS will take charge of preaching him the religious values.
The political personality involved in this cruel act should realize that he is vulnerable to an election.
The American college Alumni is such a strong people force that you can't handle. You are trying to call the old students as henchmen?
If you create a sentiment among CSI christians, we can rock the whole state.
Coming Next is Who is Our Bishop?
followed by History of missionaries in south India.
