What is this all about?

To alumni like us (both my wife and I)living abroad for a number of years this message is alarming. We are all children of American College who are very proud of our educational heritage. In December, I walked a South African colleague of mine through the campus, not only through the physical serenity of the ambience, but also through the educational philosophy of the 60s and 70s that encouraged crops of scholars who could think as opposed to the number of "first class" degree holders produced by sister institutions. He was impressed and equated his brief experience to that of walking through Oxford, Harvard and Princeton.

It has been very disturbing for the last decade or so to learn that American College has become a hotbed of partisanal politics, mainly based on caste and religion. It is sad that she cannot rise above these petty politics and be the beacon she once was.

It looks as if the problem has escalated to warrant an Initiative for Protecting American College. We need details please. We may not be able to join you physically, but may be able to muster support in other ways!

Sir,

It is very shocking to see the news item in today's leading dailies that the Historical Educational Pillar of Madurai city is under attack .

Though I don't know the full details of the problem, I am disturbed very much that the historical, prestigious educational institution is in a crisis like situation.

I request all concerned to stop their activities which will damage the name of the college.

As an alumni (1969 – 1973), I still identify this prestigious institution for its unique environment for education.

The environment prevailed when I studied is still in my memory and it will last forever. The students from other colleges can fully feel the uniqueness of the college. So, I request all concerned not to interfere with this quality. The uniqueness of the college should be made available to the future generation.

The real spirit of Christianity was made available to me when I studied, since I was a Hindu student from a backward village. I always believe that the vision of the missionaries who have founded the college is to make the education avaialable to the people from all strata of society. The persons who are now trying to bring the institution under the complete control of the religious functionary should understand that their actions will, not only damage the casteless and non- religious image of the institution but also it will give food for the fanatic religious elements to provoke religious antagonism among the general unenlightened people. It will also defeat the vision of the missionaries and the great Principals and Lecturers who are the backbone of the brand name of the institution.
The institution should remain as it remained so far.

As an alumni I am indebted to the institution.

I therefore request all concerned to save the brand name of the college in the interest of future generations.

Yours sincerely,
B.Ammaiappan.

This is an appalling development! I came to know about the issue through email that was circulated among the alumni. Former students like myself look up to the American College with great respect and gratitude, and pledge our support to all measures taken to protect the institution. Although i am not able to be there in person, i would like to extend my complete support to all steps taken to solve and save the American college. I am also sure that i speak for my batch of students who can not be there in person.A special word of thanks to Peakay for putting up this blog to keep us informed. I second samg's statement, the crisis will be resolved, and the alumni are here to help. Looking forward eagerly to an update!

At the outset, I must congratulate Mr. Chinnaraj Joseph, for his exemplary leadership qualities. He has shown great determination, courage and conviction in this hour of crisis. We the old students are with you. Please continue to fight for Justice. The struggle must go on until the rights are established and injustice eradicated.

As an alumni of the college, I have been closely watching the happenings for the last few days. It really pains me that once a college of great REPUTE has now become a laughing stock . I strongly feel that the college has lost its missionary zeal . The very objective of the college has been defeated. This is an ugly sign . This is mainly because of the activities of some unscrupulous elements like the Bursar and his group plus the Bishop (Rt. Rev Christopher Asir) and his group for their own interest.

It is really disheartening to note that even few professors take side with evil. They are supposed to be the role models and teach values to the students and be true to the college.

I am deeply ashamed of Bishop, for his unruly behaviour . As a head of the Church, he should set himself high standards (what Christ has taught) instead of involving in such obnoxious activities. He should better concentrate on spreading the Gospel rather than stoop down to such crooked activities. (Lust for money, Lust for position, Lust for power). He’s like a hireling. What does the hireling care for? The hire (money)! That’s his only motivation, just what he can get out of it. As far as he is concerned, people are just “dumb sheep’ and that’s the attitude of the hireling.

A godly leader is one who seeks responsibility. A wicked leader is one who seeks authority. The Apostle Peter admonishes leadership who might be tempted to reach for authority.

A good leader is concerned about FEEDING the flock, but a bad leader is concerned about fleecing the flock. God says loud and clear “ AVOID THAT KIND OF LEADERSHIP.. those that fleece the flock, those that use the sheep to serve their own ends and needs” (read Micah 3: 0,11)

“Don’t think you are a lord over God’s heritage, but be examples to the flock” (I Peter 5: 2,3pph). Church leaders are not appointed by God to exercise autocratic powers over the Church.

We are under no obligation to follow an evil leader. We must avoid those church leaders who mistreat the flock. When a leader starts grasping for authority, we must quit follow him and he will lose his leadership.

One of the ways God disciplines an erring and bad leader is when the people stop following. “FOLLOW THAT WHICH IS GOOD… He that doeth good is of God; but he that doeth evil has not seen God” (3 Jn 11) .

God tells us if we allow false leadership to remain in power, both leaders and people will be cast down into destruction.

We pray that God almighty to deal with the Bishop and his family and bring them to repentance.

This college has produced many a successful, eminent, versatile and prudent leaders. I therefore, appeal to all the old and present students to join hands with Mr. Chinnaraj Joseph, in this hour of crisis and save the alma mater.

Dear friends, if we keep quiet now, then we are accountable to God and our sons and daughters are one day going to study in this great institution. I, therefore, humbly request everyone to be a part of this great revival.

This is going to be a decisive moment in the History of this great Institution. A moment of Truth. A moment of Victory.

I appeal to the Principal to detach this great Institution from the Diocese for the betterment of the society and uphold the true missionary zeal. Let this college be free from the clutches of the evil church leaders.

“SUCCESS DOESN’T MEAN WINNING EVERYTIME, BUT RISING UP EVERYTIME WE FALL”

I pray to the Lord Almighty to grant you wisdom, patience, courage to overcome this crisis.

We are the Muscat alumni of our beloved The American College.

We are deeply hurt by the current crisis at The American College. The College has given us what we have now; and it has made us what we are. The American College is a part of us. Therefore, we feel very saddened by what is happening to our College.

We know that there are a handful of The American College alumni here in Oman. We have already contacted one another, and have had a meeting already on this issue. We are trying to contact as many alumni as possible – not only in Oman, but in the whole of the Gulf.

Aiya, we hereby express solidarity with you all in this hour of assault on our College. We want you to know that we have been thinking of our College, and discussing it with one another the whole day. We support you in your stand, and we stand with you.

Aiya, please let us know in what other way we can be of help. We are waiting to hear from you on the latest developments. We hope we can be of some help in spearheading an international movement of solidarity from all The American College alumni.

To
Bishop & Family,
Madurai Ramnad Diocese,

It has been quite normal these days that heads of the religious institutions are failing to understand the very nature & purpose of an religious institutions. You proved that you are very much part of the 3rd rated caste & family politics.Do you think that Jesus asked you to saved and increase the wealth of your family and diocease?.

Please stop these kind of activities and remember the very nature of the Chritianity and birth of Jesus ie "To preach not breach the Word of God".

All the student of the American college please do whatever you can to free a great institution from these gundas.

Jesus will be with you. You will succeed.

Gabriel.

Yesterday i posted my comment and it seems gone from the site.

I wanted to express the feelings that i have for those who are struggling to save the american college from the clutches of religious mongers like the bishop of madurai and ramnad.

Let him ponder alone and take time to analyse and confront his inner motiv behind such a drastic decission like taking up the american college to himself n his family in the name of developing it.

Let the bishop ask himself if what he is doing presently would be acceptable in the sight of the lord.

Let him pracice what he preaches bibilically and use the stick given in his hand as a recovery tool to pull the sinners n not use to push the good and noble hearted to sin.

Presently his activities does not augur well with his portfolio and if he doesnt change his attitude, then there is no difference between him and the paid hooligans and goondas of the society.

May god almighty help him to realise himself and help the college to come out of this drastic situation

Towards a greater tomorrow….

To be a witness at an historical event is a privilege. I was there when it happened. After I arrived in Madurai on 17 July 2009, every Wednesday became a day of expectation and disappointment waiting for the verdict of the High Court. Finally it arrived and how! Fantastic! Victory on all counts! I gave a talk on 25 August, inaugurating the PG Zoology and Immunology and Microbiology Association for the year 2009. It felt like celebrating the birth of a child. There were joyous faces around and there were crackers going off, but there were also a few sore faces probably regretting to have chosen the losing side like those expecting a baby and getting an aborted foetus instead.

It is important to remember that one should be graceful in victory. It is like a boxing match; when you win you shake hands with your opponent who was trying to murder you a minute ago. Remember that the pain from blows received is common to both. If Nelson Mandela could forgive the South African White despite all atrocities committed in his homeland, so could you. NM was no Gandhi, he did not show his other cheek and NM’s supporters shed blood not only their own, but their enemies’ as well. There was a Robben Island, but there was no retribution when the victory arrived. If that could happen in SA, so could it in AC. Try and put back American College where it only originally belonged and build a great institution it once was. It will take time to recover from the trauma, but it would happen if faster energies are directed towards positive goals. Throw away the thoughts of revenge unless the individuals involved are criminals who have to be prosecuted in a court of law for criminal offences against people and property. Be more Christian than the Christians who tried to hurt you. A student or a faculty who supported the other side believing in their cause is not a criminal. So embrace them, rehabilitate them and integrate them into your community. I do not even see the need to vote and give an opinion on who the more serious criminal was. What are we going to achieve by it?

When I come back to American College, the next year, I would like to see my beloved college on solid tracks heading towards a greater glory. Would it be too much to ask for a “cleaner” college, both physically and ethically?

GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST. ATLAST, PATIENCE OF THE ALUMINI OF AMERICAN COLLEGE AND ITS WELL WISHERS PREVAILED. KNEELS BENT DOWN BEFORE THE ALMIGHTY TO SAVE THE COLLEGE FROM THE CLUTCHES OF THE BISHOP AND HIS HENCHMEN INDEED HAS RESULTED IN A MASSIVE COURT VERDICT. ATLEAST NOW, IT IS HIGH TIME FOR THE BISHOP TO PUT DOWN HIS RESIGNATION TAKING, MORAL, LEGAL AND ETHICAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS MISDEEDS AND RESIGN FROM THE HIGHEST POST THAT HE WAS CONFERRED UPON, AS HE IS NO MORE ELIGIBLE TO HOLD THE HIGHLY RESPECTED POST AND ACCEPT WORLDY AS WELL AS RELIGIOUS FAILURE ON HIS PART.

ONCE AGAIN, ALL GLORY, HONOR AND PRAISE TO THE ONE WHO IS IN HIGHEST.
